UIC News - Chancellor signs sustainability pledge

Chancellor Paula Allen-Meares and U of I President Michael Hogan signed the new Illinois Campus Sustainability Compact at the gold, or highest, level of participation, making a five-year commitment to incorporate sustainability into campus practices, programs and outreach efforts.
A previous compact signed in 2007 expired this year.

UIC’s Office of Sustainability called the signing a further signal of the university’s commitment as a local leader in the international sustainability movement. UIC already has committed to sustainability goals set at national and international levels.

The campus was one of 90 inaugural signatories to the 2007 American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment, now signed by nearly 700 institutions.

Allen-Meares signed the Talloires Declaration in April 2009, a 10-point international agreement among over 400 institutions in 50 countries to build and maintain an institutional culture of sustainability.
