The Friends of Volo Bog is a charitable Corporation promoting citizen awareness of the local natural heritage of Volo Bog State Natural Area, awareness of the local Natural heritage of Volo Bog Natural Area, portions of which are dedicated state nature preserves, and to preserve the same through special events, educational and training programs, acquisitions of properties for such purposes and take whatever steps deemed necessary to insure the continued care and preservation of Volo Bog State Natural Area as a natural site.
This organization offers a scholarship for a college student pursuing an environmentally-related career. The applicant must reside in Lake, McHenry, Kane, Cook, DuPage, Kendall or Will County. The winner applicant will receive a one-time award of $1000 used for the fall term.
The winning applicant will be based upon scholastic achievement, career objectives, and a statement of personal environmental ethics.
A selection committee, appointed by the Friends of Volo Bog Board of Directors, will read and review the application packages. Committee members will evaluate the essays.The identity of the authors will remain anonymous to those who evaluate the essays until the results of the selection process is presented to the Friends of Volo Bog Board of Directors. The Friends of Volo Bog Board of Directors will make the final decision by May.
To apply, student must fill out the application for, provide two letters of recommendation, an official transcript, an essay entitled "My Statement of Environmental Ethics" and a professional goals paragraph .
