Graduate Assistant, Tree Campus USA

The Office of Sustainability and the Vice Chancellor for Administrative Services at UIC is seeking a one-year 0.5 FTE Graduate Assistant beginning May 2011 to assist in developing the Tree Campus USA program for UIC.

Specific responsibilities include:
  • Verify and expand the current tree inventory to include girths, genus and species, tree condition and historical trees, location on campus maps
  • Draft a Campus Tree Care Plan
  • Plan an Arbor Day observance event
  • Create a service learning project
  • Assist tree care committee

The work will be conducted in coordination with the Office of Sustainability, Facilities Information Management, and Facilities Management. The preferred candidate will be a graduate student in Architecture, Biological Sciences, Urban Planning, Earth & Environmental Sciences, or other relevant field with an undergraduate degree or course work in landscape architecture, urban forestry, environmental science, plant biology, landscape design and demonstrated interest in sustainability. Excellent organizational, planning, and writing skills required. Desired skills include use of GIS for data collection and mapping and experience working with trees in an urban environment.
