UIC is gearing up a lab version of the free cycle store. We have donated chemicals on the shelves of the RRC (http://store.rrc.uic.edu/EHSO). We also have a virtual freecycle store to share more chemicals, lab equipment, and other general labware (http://www.ohsowe.com/local/groups/LabShare)

Since CTA already covers UIC-Chicago area there are no specific transfer points that the shuttles cover. Although, UIC does have shuttles that go to the Metra stations and inter-campus ones.

Also, check out our new blog on the UIC iCarpool service - it allows students and faculty to share rides to and from campus.

Great post, great idea.

I believe UIC still provides a shuttle to Union Station, but, does it reach major CTA transfer points? Such as the Lake stop, Roosevelt, North/Milwaukee/Damen etc. That could increase efficiency.

Also, does UIC provide a Car Pool database which would allow commuters to contact each other via a message board?

I think it is a great idea to create a competition to up the recycling efforts. Amazingly sometimes that is what it takes. I cannot believe how hard some cities make it to recycle. It should be something that is very convenient or else people will not participate. Recycling is not something that should be taken lightly, our word resources are being consumed at ALARMING rates and we need to take action and do something about it.

Aquaponics has amazing synergies given that as a water engineer I gratly appreciate that the fish in fish farming elevates ammonia concentrations in the water the fish farms discharge, which can be very environmentally detrimental to the streams downstream. What I can't really undestand is how the practice can be, as claimed to be, a user of much less water than normal farming methods.

These projects are wonderful to be a part of on so many different levels. First of all the contractor's contribution towards sustaining our environment. The homeowners are often so gratified by the end result and their own efforts to be environmentally conscious. As well it creates a unique change of pace for many of us in the construction industry. I believe when we begin to see the products become more affordable these projects will become mainstream.
